On 13th November 2025, six faculty and students from Deakin University (Australia) visited the GEM-ITB-CSU Joint Research Laboratory in Indonesia for an immersive “green tech + cultural integration” exchange. The delegation was warmly received by Dr Ji Rui and Dr Zhiwen Ke (Vice Chief Scheduler of the Joint Laboratory), together with the full laboratory team.
▲ The Deakin University delegation together with the GEM-ITB-CSU team strengthened international research collaboration through this educational visit.
Accompanied by laboratory staff, the delegation first toured the environmental-art exhibition area established by GEM. Exhibits such as the “recycled plastic-wood corridor”, the “Green Hercules” sculpture, the new-energy vehicle wheel display, and the “Rebirth · Varying Forms” installation brought to life the concept of “Limited Resources · Unlimited Recycling”, making it tangible and visible. As lecturer E. M. Slevin commented, “GEM makes sustainability visible and tangible!”
▲ The delegation inspected research facilities equipped with more than 300 advanced instruments, including Indonesia’s first EPMA and a digital reactor system
Next, the delegation entered the exhibition hall and R&D center, taking in more than 300 units of advanced equipment from Japan, the U.S., and Germany. Highlights included Indonesia’s first field-emission electron probe micro-analyzer (EPMA) and a digital three-stage reactor system from 10 L to 1 000 L capacity. E. M. Slevin remarked: “This is now Indonesia’s top-tier, internationally first-class R&D and testing platform, capable of supporting the full innovation chain from metallurgy to new-energy materials.”
The laboratory also features a prayer room and a multifunctional academic-exchange hall dedicated to Indonesian colleagues, embedding technology sharing and cultural integration in tandem. Slevin concluded: “GEM is advancing on both hardware and software, exemplifying a new international-cooperation paradigm of ‘growing together’.”
▲ The delegation visited the research center and analysis laboratories to understand the R&D processes and the applications of new energy material technologies
Finally, E. M. Slevin paid tribute to Professor Xu Kaihua, Chairman of GEM, thanking him for his long-term commitment to Indonesia’s technological and cultural development. It is believed that, leveraging the GEM-ITB-CSU bridge, Indonesia will soon experience a new leap forward in new-energy and metallurgical engineering technology.
