PT QMB New Energy Materials Indonesia is located in the Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park (IMIP), Central Sulawesi Province, Indonesia. The company is jointly established by GEM Co., Ltd. of China (55%), Tsingshan (10%), Brunp/CATL-controlled entity (10%), South Korea’s ECOPRO BM (9%), Japan’s Hanwa Co., Ltd. (8%), and Yibin Libao (8%).

The company is committed to realizing the industrial vision of “feeding laterite nickel ore in and producing advanced battery materials out,” delivering green nickel and battery materials for the global new energy battery industry.

The industrial park covers an area of 106 hectares with a total investment of USD 3.7 billion. It has an annual production capacity of 150,000 tonnes of nickel metal in MHP, 30,000 tonnes (metal content) of nickel-cobalt-manganese sulfate crystals, 30,000 tonnes of electrolytic nickel, 50,000 tonnes of ultra-high-nickel ternary precursors, 30,000 tonnes of ternary cathode materials, and 100,000 tonnes of manganese products (manganese sulfate and electrolytic manganese).

The park has established a complete integrated industrial chain, from laterite nickel ore to MHP → nickel sulfate crystals → electrolytic nickel → ternary precursors → ternary cathode materials, with a total annual output value exceeding USD 4 billion.

The 150,000-tonne nickel (metal content) MHP production line is now operating successfully. Leveraging mature HPAL (High Pressure Acid Leach) hydrometallurgical technology, it has become a representative success case in the laterite nickel industry. The application of a 1,168-cubic-meter high-temperature, high-pressure autoclave reactor has also set a benchmark for the industry. At present, the production lines rank among the world’s leading levels in terms of input–output efficiency, product quality, and economic performance.

The 30,000-tonne nickel-cobalt-manganese sulfate crystal project and the 50,000-tonne ternary precursor project have been completed and put into operation. The 30,000-tonne electrolytic nickel project commenced production in September 2025, while the 30,000-tonne ternary cathode material project is scheduled to begin production in December 2025.

As part of the park’s ESG initiatives, a 40,000-tonne MHP project has been jointly developed by MDK and GEM, led by an Indonesian local enterprise. The project was put into operation in December 2024, achieving a global record of just 12 months from contract signing to commissioning.

Guided by the design philosophy of “Technology + Intelligence + Green Development,” the project adopts HPAL hydrometallurgical technology to process low-grade laterite nickel ore (nickel content of 0.8–1.2%) that is not suitable for pyrometallurgical routes such as RKEF and side-blown processes. It produces nickel-cobalt-manganese hydroxide intermediate products (MHP), high-purity nickel-cobalt-manganese sulfate crystals, and ternary precursor materials, achieving over 95% recovery of nickel, cobalt, and manganese from low-grade ore.

This process significantly conserves nickel, cobalt, and manganese resources, with carbon emissions only 10% of those from pyrometallurgical processes, establishing the park as a world-leading green HPAL hydrometallurgical nickel facility.

With the vision of “Cultural Integration, Growing Together with Indonesia,” the park continues to build a global ESG benchmark, including the establishment of a world-class laterite nickel HPAL engineering center and a world-class nickel industry museum. It is dedicated to promoting the synergistic development of industry and social value, supporting Indonesia’s electrification and energy transition.

May we dance with nickel together and move toward a green future!
