GEM Company Profile

On December 28, 2001, Professor Xu Kaihua, Founder of GEM, established the company in Shenzhen based on the vision of "Green-Eco-Manufacture".It has been listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange (stock code: 002340) and the Swiss Stock Exchange. Currently,GEM has a total share capital of 5.124 billion shares, a net assets of 19.426 billion RMB, an annual output value of more than 33 billion RMB, and over 11,000 employees.

As a pioneer in China, the company was the first to propose the industrial philosophy of "Limited Resources, Unlimited Recycling". It actively advocates the "urban mining" business model to "eliminate pollution and regenerate resources", an initiative that advances the development of a circular society and mitigates global greenhouse effects.Today, the company stands as a global leader in urban mining and a key driver of the world’s new energy industry. It has also established itself as a world-leading waste recycling group, a core supplier to the global new energy sector, and a flagship enterprise in China’s circular economy.

In 2024, the company was listed among the Top 500 Chinese Private Enterprises (No. 458), continued to be ranked in the Top 500 Chinese Manufacturing Enterprises (No. 361) and the Top 500 Chinese Private Manufacturing Enterprises (No. 305), and was included in the 2022 Forbes China Top 50 Sustainable Industrial Enterprises and the 2022 Hurun China Top 100 Private Enterprises for Sustainable Development (ranked 7th).

Industry Position

GEM’s main business covers the comprehensive utilization of waste resources and the new energy industry, forming a dual-driver business model of “urban mining + new energy materials manufacturing.”

In the field of urban mining, the company recycles and utilizes waste power batteries, electronic waste, end-of-life vehicles, waste plastics, and strategic resources such as nickel, cobalt, lithium, and tungsten. It mainly remanufactures products including nickel, cobalt, lithium, tungsten; scarce resources like gold, silver, platinum, and palladium; ultra-fine cobalt-nickel-tungsten powder materials; and modified plastics.

In the new energy field, the company manufactures ternary precursors for power batteries, ternary cathode materials, and cobalt tetroxide materials for 3C digital batteries, standing as a leading enterprise in the global new energy supply chain.

The company has taken the lead in establishing national-level innovation platforms, including the National Engineering Research Center for E-Waste Recycling, the National Key Laboratory of Energy Metal Resources and New Materials, and the National Enterprise Technology Center. It has built China’s systematic technology and intellectual property system in waste recycling, resource regeneration, and material remanufacturing. Globally, it has filed 3,767 patents, led or participated in 475 national and industry standards, achieved a number of major scientific and technological achievements, and won 2 National Science and Technology Progress Awards and 10 first prizes at the provincial and ministerial level.

20 years of efforts for a green future, 20 years of amazing feats in recycling, 20 years of friendships worldwide.

We have worked tirelessly for "Eliminating Pollution, Recycling Resources" through thick and thin over the last two decades!

The company has built 16 waste recycling and new energy material manufacturing plants across 11 provinces and cities in China, as well as in South Africa, South Korea, Indonesia and other countries. It has established an urban mining recycling system centered on major cities in China, with its green development footprint extending globally and covering over 40% of China's total land area. It has established waste treatment cooperation relationships with more than 500 million people.

The company recycles and remanufactures over 30 types of scarce resources, including cobalt, nickel, lithium, copper, tungsten, gold, silver, platinum, palladium, rhodium, gallium, germanium, indium and rare earths.Annually, it recycles and processes more than 10% of China’s retired power batteries and electronic waste, more than 6% of China’s scrapped vehicles;recycles nickel equivalent to 20% of China’s primary nickel production, cobalt equivalent to 350% of China’s primary cobalt production, and tungsten equivalent to 6% of China’s primary tungsten production.

The company has been successively awarded national honors by the Chinese government, including the National Circular Economy Education Demonstration Base, National Eco-Environment Science Popularization Base, National Social Practice Base for Environmental Education for Primary and Secondary Schools, National Green Factory, and National Urban Mining Demonstration Base. It has also won international awards such as the 2018 Davos "Global Circular Economy Multinational Company Award" and the 2020 Paulson Prize for Sustainable Development (Green Innovation Category).

Regarded as a successful global case of waste recycling, the company has been featured in the world-renowned journal Nature. It has also been designated by the United Nations as a demonstration enterprise for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) pollution reduction. It has joined the leadership platform of the global circular economy, enabling China’s circular economy standards to gain global recognition. As an outstanding practitioner of China’s circular society development and green development concept, the company has made contributions as a Chinese enterprise to curbing the greenhouse effect and has become a world-leading representative of enterprises practicing green and low-carbon development.

On July 22, 2013, General Secretary Xi Jinping inspected GEM’s Wuhan Industrial Park, praised GEM’s recycling model, and stated:

“Turning waste into treasure and recycling is a sunrise industry. Waste is a misplaced resource. Turning waste into resources, turning decay into magic, is both a science and an art. You must continue your efforts.”

Looking to the future, GEM will adhere to the green industrial strategy of “urban mining + new energy materials manufacturing”, carry out ESG value chain cooperation with upstream and downstream partners worldwide, connect with China’s new round of equipment renewal and consumer goods trade-in-for-new strategy, promote global recycling, serve the global new energy industry and CO₂ reduction, and strive to build a world-class green industrial group to serve the rapid development of the world’s new energy industry.
