From July 22 to 24, 2025, at the invitation of Professor Xu Kaihua, Chairman of GEM, Dr. Achmad Adhitya, Special Advisor to the Vice President of Indonesia, led a delegation to visit GEM’s Jingmen and Wuhan Industrial Parks. The visit aimed to promote cooperation in science and culture between the Indonesian government and GEM. Professor Xu warmly welcomed the delegation.

The “Indonesian Government – GEM – CSU Joint Master’s Program” warmly welcomes guests from the Office of the Vice President of Indonesia.

Dr. Achmad Adhitya first conveyed Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka’s appreciation for Professor Xu and GEM’s active contributions to talent cultivation and industrial development in Indonesia. The delegation toured GEM’s National Circular Economy Education Demonstration Base and “Urban Mine” Museum, the National Engineering Research Center for WEEE Recycling, the International Training Center, and the National Key Laboratory for Energy Metal Resources and New Materials, as well as several core production areas. They gained firsthand insight into GEM’s integration of industry, science, and culture as a global enterprise.

Professor Xu expressed a warm welcome to Dr. Achmad Adhitya for traveling such a long distance to visit GEM. He thanked the Indonesian government for its strong support of GEM’s educational and technological development in Indonesia. Professor Xu Kaihua stated that Indonesia offers a very favorable investment environment, and that GEM has achieved joyful and successful development in the country.

In front of the “A Century of Television Wall” Professor Xu shared GEM’s plan to launch e-waste recycling operations in Indonesia, stating that “every piece of e-waste can be recycled.” At the “1,000-Patent Wall Exhibition Area”, he highlighted GEM’s remarkable innovation trajectory—growing from 2 patents to 1,000 in 17 years, and then to over 5,000 in less than a decade. GEM has filed hundreds of patents in Indonesia, nearly 100 of which have already been granted. He noted that China’s innovation system, strongly backed by its government through direct State Council leadership over the intellectual property system, has enabled GEM to become a global leader in waste recycling. Indonesia, he suggested, could adopt a similar model to foster corporate innovation.

Guests from the Indonesian Vice President's Office visited GEM’s Jingmen Industrial Park and toured the National “Urban Mine” Museum with Prof. Xu Kaihua.

In the business exhibition area, Professor Xu emphasized GEM’s world-class achievements in building nickel resources in Indonesia, including its production of nickel sulfate, nickel plates, and precursors. GEM has built a complete nickel industrial chain, facilitating Indonesia’s transition toward value-added nickel processing and the creation of globally competitive brands.

The delegation also visited the 4th Intensive Chinese Training Camp for the “Indonesian Government-GEM-CSU Joint Master’s Program in Metallurgical Engineering, Transportation, and International Trade” at the International Training Center. Dr. Achmad Adhitya received a detailed briefing on the scale of the program, the scholarships provided by GEM, and the welfare support offered to Indonesian students. Dr. Achmad Adhitya also conveyed the Indonesian Vice President’s warm greetings to the students, stating:

“Thank you, GEM, and thank you all for your efforts in pursuing this new dream. I believe what you learn here will serve you well in the future-not only benefiting yourselves, but also contributing to your nation and society. Stay sharp, stay strong, and let’s build a brighter future for Indonesia. I wish you all academic success!”

At the China–Indonesia Science and Culture Cooperation Forum on July 23, Professor Xu shared updates on key joint initiatives including the GEM-Indonesian Government-CSU Joint International Master Training Program, the China-Indonesia Joint Research Laboratory for New Energy Materials and Metallurgy Engineering Technology, the Overseas Institute for Outstanding Engineers, and the Faculty of Future Metallurgy. He stressed that cultivating engineering talent is crucial for Indonesia’s development. GEM has made significant investments in this area, building advanced R&D platforms locally. Professor Xu called for policy support from the Indonesian government to maximize the use of advanced equipment and build national-level innovation platforms and talent strategies in Indonesia.

The Vice President’s delegation also joined a virtual tour of QMB project and Bandung Joint Laboratory, and received a detailed presentation on the development of the International Green Industrial Park (IGIP). Professor Xu explained the vision for IGIP to become a world-class green nickel industrial zone, a pioneer of the global circular economy, and a model of cultural integration.

The China-Indonesia Science and Culture Cooperation Forum was held at GEM’s Jingmen Industrial Park.

Professor Rachmat Pambudy, Minister of the Indonesian Ministry of National Development Planning (BAPPENAS), participated in the meeting via video and highly praised Professor Xu’s contributions. He expressed his hope for in-person discussions to further strengthen cooperation between the Indonesian government and GEM. Dr. Achmad Adhitya thanked GEM for its long-standing commitment to providing scholarships and platforms for Indonesian young talents, and emphasized that the Vice President is closely following the program. The Vice President’s Office will continue to support engineering talent development and bilateral educational cooperation. It also aims to help elevate the China-Indonesia Joint Laboratory into a national innovation platform and support IGIP in becoming part of Indonesia’s national strategy.

On July 24, the Indonesian delegation visited GEM Wuhan Industrial Park, where they learned about GEM’s innovations in intelligent, flexible disassembly of retired EV batteries and e-waste recycling. They expressed high recognition of GEM’s green circular economy model and pledged to promote GEM’s advanced industrial philosophy across Indonesia and support the development of an “urban mine” demonstration line.

Guests from the Indonesian Vice President’s Office posed for a photo in front of the “Green Hercules” at GEM’s Wuhan Industrial Park, symbolically “shouldering” a green Earth together with GEM.

Before departing, Dr. Achmad Adhitya once again thanked GEM for the warm hospitality. He noted that the visit had deepened the partnership between the Vice President’s Office and GEM, providing valuable insights into how Chinese enterprises drive innovation and develop a vibrant recycling industry. He emphasized the importance of continued collaboration to support GEM’s investments in Indonesia, jointly explore the development of local engineering talent, and advance the circular economy.

Dr. Zhang Kun, Senior Deputy General Manager of GEM; Dr. Xu Pengyun, Deputy General Manager of GEM, and Dr. Wang Yaning, Assistant to General Manager of GEM participated in the reception.
