On July 28, 2023, on the sidelines of the opening ceremony of the 31st FISU World University Games Summer in Chengdu, Prof. Xu Kaihua, Board Chairman of GEM, was received by Indonesian President Joko Widodo as a representative of Chinese entrepreneurs.

Chairman Xu Kaihua briefed President Joko Widodo on GEM's QMB nickel resources project in Indonesia, as well as the latest development of industrial, technological and cultural integration between China and Indonesia. Over the past three years, GEM has completed the world's first laterite nickel ore hydrometallurgy project independently designed and successfully operated by an enterprise, built the world's first nickel industry museum and hydrometallurgy and new energy materials engineering technology research center in Indonesia, and worked with Indonesia's Coordinating Ministry for Maritime and Investment Affairs, and Central South University, to run an international master program of metallurgical and materials science engineering between China and Indonesia, putting an end to Indonesia's history of relying on foreign hydrometallurgical technology and engineering professionals, and opening a new page for Sino-Indonesian cultural exchanges and cooperation.

During the meeting, Chairman Xu Kaihua expressed to President Joko Widodo that GEM would further increase its investment, to create an industrial chain from nickel laterite ores to battery materials in Indonesia; would further advance the international master program of metallurgical and materials science engineering between China and Indonesia, cultivate a number of doctors of engineering in an upgraded way, and train 1,000 advanced talents in metallurgical technology and materials science for Indonesia; would build a recycling economy demonstration park between China and Indonesia for green recycling of electronic waste and scrapped cars in Indonesia, contribute Chinese green and recycling solutions to the economic and social prosperity of Indonesia, improve the livelihood of the Indonesia's people, and write a moving chapter for Belt and Road development.

This is the second time that President Joko Widodo has received Chairman Xu Kaihua. On the sidelines of the 2022 G20 Summit, GEM's Nickel Resources Industrial Park in Indonesia, Laterite Nickel Ore Hydrometallurgy and New Energy Materials Engineering Technology Center and Nickel Resources Museum were shown together with Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Rail as highlights of China-Indonesia cooperation to the heads of state of China and Indonesia during their meeting. At the same time, President Joko Widodo received Chairman Xu Kaihua and other Chinese entrepreneurs amid his busy schedule, speaking highly of Chinese entrepreneurs' investment and development in Indonesia!
