On March 28, 2021, two Indonesian students, Dr. Muhammad Imam Akbar Hairi from Huazhong University of Science and Technology and Dr. Dela Efifania from Wuhan University of Technology, settled in GEM as interns, kicking off a wonderful journey of internship practice in the green recycling industry. Wang Qiang, assistant general manager of GEM, and the person in charge of GEM’s nickel resources project in Indonesia gave the newcomers a warm reception.

GEM and the Indonesian government are strategic partners, and friends who share weal and woe with each other. Over the past three years, under the guidance of The Belt and Road Initiative, both sides have continuously deepened strategic cooperation and come a long way in the fields of industrial development, talent cultivation and cultural exchange, injecting a strong impetus into their development.

The Road of Industrial Cooperation

At the beginning of 2018, Professor Xu Kaihua, Board Chairman of GEM, and Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Indonesian Coordinating Minister of Maritime Affairs and Investment, met in Shanghai. In September 2018, they met again in Singapore. In January 2019, the project got off to a good start and they met with the Indonesian President Joko Widodo and the latter offered constructive suggestions. In July 2019, Mr. Luhut came all the way from Indonesia to GEM Jingmen Park to experience the circular culture. GEM and the Indonesian government have been working in tandem with each other, sailing off into the sunrise.

In 2018, GEM started by working with Tsingshan Holding Group, settling in the nickel resources base in Indonesia and setting the goal of 500,000 tons of nickel resources. At present, GEM is accelerating the construction of the project which is planned to be completed in 2021. After it is completed and put into production, the project will further enhance GEM’s supply guarantee capability and core competitiveness in the global ternary battery raw material manufacturing field. GEM’s move to introduce the internationally advanced materials and technologies and its green concept of circular development into Indonesia will also be instrumental in the development of circular economy in Indonesia.

The Road of Talent Exchange

While injecting capital and technology into Indonesia, GEM attaches great importance to talent exchange with Indonesia. In October 2019, GEM • Central South University • Indonesia Co-Training Class, which bore witness to the cooperation between China and Indonesia, Successfully formed in China, becoming a beautiful sight of The Belt and Road Initiative. In December of the same year, 21 international students of the Program for Master's Degree in Engineering visited GEM Jingmen Park and learned more about GEM's R&D projects, construction of experiment platforms and cultivation of scientific research talent. In response to The Belt and Road Initiative of Chinese government and the strategy of making the country strong through the maritime industry of Indonesian government, all parties made concerted efforts to provide high-caliber talent for the development and utilization of Indonesia's rich mineral resources and to promote its economic and social development.

Attaching great importance to the introduction and cultivation of talent, GEM has received Indonesian students studying in China as interns since 2019. Adhering to the concepts of openness, cooperation, sharing and inclusiveness, we sincerely invite partners from all over the world to join GEM in realizing our green dream.

The Road of Sharing Weal and Woe

Virus knows no borders, but the worst of times reveals the best in people. In March 2020, the global epidemic situation started to head south. It is known to all that China and Indonesia are neighbors. After learning that Indonesia had been deeply affected by the epidemic, GEM offered a helping hand without hesitation and immediately collected protective materials worth about 900,000 yuan to help Indonesia to tide over the crisis. Mr. Luhut wrote in his thank-you letter that GEM's donation was a great help to Indonesia in its fight against the COVID-19 epidemic and restoration of people's normal life.

Prof. Xu Kaihua, Board Chairman of GEM, has publicly revealed many times that GEM will introduce advanced green technologies, advanced equipment and outstanding talent into Indonesia so as to accelerate the development of its nickel resources project in Indonesia, and transform Indonesia’s nickel resources to new energy materials through deep processing so as to promote the upgrading of Indonesia's nickel resources industry. At the same time, GEM will accelerate the international circular economy and cultural exchange, cultivate high-caliber smelting technical talent for Indonesia, gradually realize the localization of Indonesian metallurgical engineering technical talent, and grow together with the Indonesian people. Thanks to the implementation of The Belt and Road Initiative, GEM is fulfilling its commitments one by one.
