For those who share a common purpose, no mountain or sea is too far. On October 19, 2026, the green energy supporting cooperation signing ceremony between Indonesia’s Dayabumi and GEM (IGIP and QMB) was held in Jakarta. GEM’s IGIP and QMB formally signed a 130 MW solar and energy storage project development agreement with Dayabumi Energy, a subsidiary of Dayabumi, to provide stable green power supply for the IGIP zero-carbon industrial park and the QMB production base, consolidating the low-carbon operating foundation of the two major bases. Garibaldi Thohir, Chairman of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s China Committee; Gamma A. Thohir, Chairman and President-Supervisor of Dayabumi; Zagy Y. Berian, Chief Executive Officer of Dayabumi; and Bertrand Audric, Business Analyst of Dayabumi, attended the event as witnesses. Professor Xu Kaihua, Founder and Chairman of GEM, warmly received Chairman Thohir and his delegation.
A Friendship Spanning Three Years
On the eve of the signing, Professor Xu Kaihua briefed Chairman Thohir and his delegation on GEM’s achievements in Indonesia. Since setting sail for Indonesia in 2018, GEM has successively built the QMB Park, the IGIP Park, and the China-Indonesia Joint Research Laboratory in Bandung. In partnership with the Indonesian government and Central South University, GEM has jointly trained 341 Indonesian engineering master’s students, four of whom have continued their doctoral studies in China, covering disciplines including metallurgical engineering, international trade, and transportation engineering. Professor Xu Kaihua acknowledged that these achievements would not have been possible without the long-standing strong support of his old friend Chairman Thohir.
Chairman Thohir highly praised Professor Xu Kaihua’s long-term vision and GEM’s vigorous industrial development in Indonesia. Through a remote video link, he toured the IGIP Park and saw that the China-Indonesia integration community, football field, mosque, and central control building had all been completed. Upon learning that the IGIP nickel project is expected to commence production in the first half of 2027, he gladly wrote “Wishing Success” as an inscription, expressing his hope that GEM’s Indonesian endeavors would advance steadily and endure.

Three Video Stories, Paving a Path of Green Power Symbiosis
At the ceremony, a VCR carrying three years of friendship was screened first: from Chairman Thohir’s visit to GEM’s Jingmen base in February 2023, to Professor Xu Kaihua accompanying him on a inspection tour of the Three Gorges Dam, and then to the signing in Jakarta in October 2026—each moment bearing witness to the two sides’ journey together. Subsequently, the venue screened a news clip of H.E. Rosan Roeslani, Indonesia’s Minister of Investment and Downstreaming, attending the HPAL autoclave installation ceremony for the IGIP nickel project on July 22, followed by a documentary video of H.E. Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Chairman of Indonesia’s National Economic Council, on his September visit to Beijing.
One reel of footage etches the bonded partnership; another highlights GEM’s speed in park construction; and a third carries the profound endorsement of strategic synergy between the two countries.

One Agreement, a Pact Anchored to a Zero-Carbon Vision
In his remarks, Professor Xu Kaihua expressed sincere gratitude to Chairman Thohir: “Chairman Thohir is a good brother and good friend of Chinese enterprises taking root in Indonesia, and he has always worked tirelessly to help Chinese companies join hands with Indonesian local enterprises. The confidence GEM has in investing and developing in Indonesia is rooted in this invaluable trust and friendship.”
He stated that the signing of this green energy project marks a new stage in innovation and entrepreneurship cooperation between Chinese enterprises and Indonesian local youth, and shared three reflections on the cooperation:
First, China-Indonesia industrial cooperation has entered a new stage of symbiosis and shared prosperity. The cooperation model is upgrading from the early phase, dominated by Chinese investment, manufacturing, and construction, to deep participation by Indonesian local enterprises in core supporting facilities, moving toward mutual benefit and win-win outcomes. Over the past year and a half, the IGIP Park has helped Sambalagi and Werea villages establish construction and labor service entities that deeply participate in park construction, driving local income growth through industrial development and practicing the principle of “one project, one prosperous village; one person employed, one family better off.”
Second, the cooperation is closely aligned with Indonesia’s green transition. Indonesia is advancing a national 100 GW renewable energy strategy and vigorously developing electrification and the new energy industry. This cooperation project is a vivid practice of implementing the country’s green development strategy.
Third, it precisely matches the core needs of IGIP’s zero-carbon park construction. “For IGIP to build a zero-carbon park, it must rely on green power and renewable energy. The way for industrial parks to break through on emissions reduction is to continuously increase the share of renewable energy and reduce dependence on coal power.”
Citing the Nepal glacier collapse, Professor Xu Kaihua spoke of global warming and mounting pressure to cut emissions, noting that green transition is a common task for the world. He was delighted to see large numbers of Indonesian young people entering the solar and other new energy sectors, which he said is where Indonesia’s green development hope lies. He issued a call: “For Indonesia’s green transition and for global sustainable development, let us set out today and pool our efforts to develop green power—go, go, go!”

Chairman Thohir then took the stage. He joked that he wore three hats that day: Chairman of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s China Committee, Gamma’s father, and Professor Xu Kaihua’s close friend. “I sincerely thank Professor Xu Kaihua and GEM. GEM has set an excellent example for all companies investing in Indonesia.” He recalled their first meeting in Wuhan, when Professor Xu Kaihua accompanied him throughout the exchange until 1 a.m., and they found themselves highly aligned in values and mission.
In his eyes, Professor Xu Kaihua is both an outstanding entrepreneur and a passionate advocate of sustainable energy development and talent cultivation. Repeated in-depth exchanges have anchored both sides to common goals and reinforced their belief that the industry can steadily move from traditional mining toward a green and sustainable track. He expressed his hope that Gamma and other Indonesian young people will devote themselves to the new energy sector and serve their homeland, actively learning from GEM’s experience in green transition.
As Chairman of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s China Committee, Chairman Thohir pledged to continue serving as a bridge linking Chinese and Indonesian enterprises: “Even amid a complex global geopolitical environment, China-Indonesia cooperation remains the main thread, and we insist on developing together. Once a solid and sound cooperation ecosystem is built, enterprises from both countries can grow into global industry benchmarks and create a widely watched model of China-Indonesia corporate cooperation.”

From Industrial Going-Global to Green Symbiosis
GEM’s IGIP Park, with “full-domain green design and zero-carbon operation” as its core objectives, is committed to building the world’s first zero-carbon nickel industrial park. Green power is the key cornerstone for the park’s transition from “designed zero-carbon” to “operational zero-carbon”; this partnership with a local partner upgrades IGIP’s zero-carbon pathway from self-invested construction to locally co-built collaboration. For the QMB base, which has operated stably for four years, green power supply will also become a core lever for its low-carbon upgrade.
From Morowali to Jakarta, from laterite nickel ore hydrometallurgy to zero-carbon park construction, the green story of GEM and its Indonesian partners is writing a new chapter.
Xinhua News Agency reporters were invited to cover the event on site. Wang Qiang, Senior Deputy General Manager of GEM, and Xu Pengyun, Deputy General Manager of GEM, among others, jointly witnessed the signing.
