Jingmen, 15 October 2026—GEM welcomed 19 young representatives from Sambalagi and Werea villages near the International Green Industrial Park (IGIP) in Morowali Regency, Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, to its Jingmen Circular Economy Industrial Park on 12 October.

The visit marked an important milestone in a three-month training program aimed at strengthening the participants’ Chinese language skills, deepening their understanding of China’s circular economy and new energy materials industry, and fostering closer cultural ties between Indonesia and China.

As a green industrial park jointly developed by GEM, IGIP has remained committed to putting down local roots and sharing the benefits of industrial development with surrounding communities. Since its establishment in Morowali Regency, IGIP has pursued community development through infrastructure improvements, employment opportunities, cultural exchange and partnerships with local communities. These initiatives reflect GEM’s commitment to growing alongside local communities and promoting shared prosperity through cooperation between industry and villages.

Building on these efforts, GEM is extending its community engagement from employment support and cultural integration to talent development. By providing young people from Sambalagi and Werea with opportunities to learn Chinese and experience China’s industrial environment first-hand, the program seeks to equip them with practical skills and broader perspectives that may support their future development and strengthen people-to-people connections between Indonesia and China.

GEM has developed a structured Chinese language training program that combines classroom learning with practical experience. During the initial two-month phase, qualified Chinese language instructors will provide immersive lessons to help participants develop their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. The program will then take participants to GEM’s headquarters and several of its major industrial parks, where they can practise their Chinese while learning about the company’s operations and circular economy technologies.

Beyond language acquisition, the program reflects GEM’s commitment to combining industrial development with cultural exchange and local talent development. By equipping young Indonesians with language skills and first-hand exposure to China’s industrial sector, GEM aims to support their personal and professional growth while fostering stronger people-to-people connections and future industrial cooperation between Indonesia and China.

Learning about circular economy in practice

Throughout the tour, the young representatives asked questions and showed keen interest in how the company recovers valuable materials from industrial waste. At the Urban Mining Museum, they learned about the processes involved in recycling used batteries, while their visit to the Retired Lithium Battery Resource Recycling and Processing Centre provided a closer look at battery recycling technologies. At the Tungsten Resource Recycling Centre, participants weighed products such as tungsten powder and tungsten carbide, gaining a more practical understanding of resource recovery and recycling.

During the visit, participants engaged with GEM representatives and asked questions about the company’s products and industrial processes. Sisna, a young representative from Sambalagi village, asked about mixed hydroxide precipitate (MHP), the basic properties of nickel and its applications in industrial production. Egi, from Werea village, expressed interest in GEM’s product portfolio and asked how many types of products the company manufactures.

The discussions helped the participants develop a better understanding of nickel processing, MHP and GEM’s range of products, while encouraging further interest in the circular economy and green industrial development. Through these first-hand observations, the young representatives gained insights into how GEM applies resource recovery and recycling technologies to transform waste materials into valuable industrial resources.

The visit gave the participants a closer understanding of GEM’s circular economy operations and provided a practical introduction to the industrial and cultural experiences that await them during the three-month training program. As they continue learning Chinese and visiting GEM’s facilities, they will have further opportunities to develop their language skills, broaden their understanding of green industrial development and build connections with Chinese communities.

The program reflects GEM’s broader commitment to community development, cultural exchange and local talent cultivation in Indonesia. By combining industrial cooperation with educational opportunities, GEM aims to support a shift from providing direct assistance to building local capacity, enabling communities to participate more actively in and benefit from long-term development.

Looking ahead, GEM will continue to strengthen cooperation between its industrial parks and surrounding communities in Indonesia, while exploring opportunities for industrial collaboration and talent development. Through these efforts, GEM seeks to contribute to sustainable community development and foster stronger industrial and cultural ties between Indonesia and China.
