Jingmen, 6 August 2026—The Phase V Chinese Language Training Program for the Indonesia Government–GEM–Central South University Joint Master’s Program officially opened at the Green Homeland International Training Center in GEM's Jingmen Circular Economy Industrial Park. The program brings together 85 Indonesian master’s students for a three-months immersive Chinese language program.

The opening ceremony was attended by representatives from Jingchu University of Technology, including Professor Huang Yinpin, Associate Dean of the School of Foreign Languages and Director of the Chinese Language Training Program; Dr. Tian Qi, Associate Dean for Research; Professor Wu Guangqin; and members of the Chinese language teaching team. Representing GEM were Dr. Zhang Kun, Senior Deputy General Manager of GEM and Dean of the Central Research Institute; Dr. Xu Pengyun and Mr. Lyu Zhi, Deputy General Managers; Dr. Bie Chuanyu, Dr. Wang Yaning, and Dr. Yang Jian, Assistant General Managers; along with other management representatives.

The ceremony opened with a video highlighting the achievements of the previous four training camps and showcasing the transformation of Indonesian students from complete beginners to confident Chinese speakers through GEM's immersive language-learning model.

Since its launch, the Indonesia Government–GEM–Central South University Joint Master’s Program has completed five enrollment cycles, enabling 266 outstanding Indonesian students to pursue postgraduate studies in China across three strategic disciplines: metallurgical engineering, transportation, and international trade. The program serves as an important platform for cultivating high-level talent to support China–Indonesia industrial cooperation.

In her opening remarks, Professor Huang Yinpin, Director of the Phase V Chinese Language Training Program, introduced the academic team, curriculum, and assessment framework for the three-month program. The training is delivered by 12 associate professors and doctoral-level lecturers, supported by 10 full-time teaching assistants, who collectively bring extensive expertise in Chinese language education and international student instruction.

Professor Huang emphasized that the program integrates language learning with professional development through a “Chinese + Professional” approach. Beyond improving Chinese proficiency, the program is designed to help students better understand GEM's green development philosophy, experience the culture of Jingmen, and prepare for future academic and professional careers in China. She encouraged the students to become future ambassadors of China–Indonesia friendship and contributors to bilateral cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative.

Delivering the keynote address, Dr. Zhang Kun, Senior Deputy General Manager of GEM and Dean of the Central Research Institute, welcomed the new students and expressed appreciation to the teaching team from Jingchu University of Technology for their continued support. He described language as both a bridge for cultural exchange and a foundation for international industrial cooperation.

He highlighted GEM's long-term commitment to Indonesia, noting that since 2019 the company has established an integrated industrial chain, the Joint Research Laboratory in Bandung, and the International Green Industrial Park (IGIP), while consistently promoting the philosophy of integrating industry, technology, and culture for shared development.

He also introduced GEM's “Hundred–Thousand–Ten Thousand Talent Plan,” an initiative to cultivate one hundred engineering doctoral students, one thousand engineering master's students, and ten thousand engineering professionals to support sustainable industrial development.

Addressing the students, Dr. Zhang encouraged them to build a solid foundation in Chinese, broaden their international perspectives, integrate language learning with professional knowledge, and uphold discipline throughout the program. He expressed his hope that they would become future bridges connecting China and Indonesia through education, cultural exchange, and industrial collaboration.

Speaking on behalf of the new cohort, student representative Apri expressed gratitude to the Indonesian government, GEM, and Central South University for providing the opportunity to pursue postgraduate studies in China. He acknowledged that learning Chinese, particularly its characters and tones, can be challenging, but emphasized that perseverance and consistent practice are essential to achieving success.

The ceremony also featured a sharing session by Zhang Hanxing, an outstanding graduate from the Phase IV Chinese Language Intensive Training Camp and now a master’s student in International Trade at Central South University. Reflecting on her experience, she described how the three-month training program enabled her to confidently navigate daily life and academic study in China.

She encouraged the new students to make the most of every opportunity to practice language, actively communicate with teachers and classmates, and remain committed throughout the program, assuring them that their progress would exceed expectations.

Since the launch of the joint master’s program, GEM has continued to strengthen its comprehensive learning materials, comfortable accommodation, and a 24-hour immersive Chinese language environment that encourages students to communicate primarily in Chinese during both academic and daily life.

Over the next three months, all students will build a solid foundation in Chinese culture and gain exposure to knowledge related to the low-carbon circular economy industry. Upon completing the language training, they will continue their master’s studies at Central South University.

Through the Indonesia Government–GEM–CSU Joint Master's Program, GEM continues to cultivate bilingual and interdisciplinary talent capable of supporting the sustainable development of the green industry while strengthening educational exchange, people-to-people connectivity, and long-term cooperation between China and Indonesia.
