Jingmen, 16 March 2026— GEM Co., Ltd. welcomed Academician Sun Xueliang, a globally recognized expert in solid-state battery technology, to its Jingmen Industrial Park on March 16. Together with Professor Xu Kaihua, Chairman of GEM, both parties co-hosted a symposium on innovation-driven development of cathode materials for solid-state batteries.

The visit marks a strategic step in strengthening collaboration on next-generation battery materials, with discussions focusing on technological breakthroughs, industrialization pathways, and opportunities under China’s “15th Five-Year Plan.”

Academician Sun—who is also a Foreign Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, and Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, as well as Chair Professor at Eastern Institute of Technology, Ningbo—shared insights on the global development landscape of all-solid-state batteries. His session covered key industry trends, national strategies, China’s industrial positioning, and prospects for international cooperation.

He highlighted critical technological challenges, particularly in halide solid-state electrolytes, and provided forward-looking perspectives on innovation in electrolyte and cathode materials. Addressing more than 200 GEM management and R&D personnel, Academician Sun emphasized that solid-state batteries and advanced energy storage will play a pivotal role as emerging pillar industries driving future economic growth.

During the exchange, he systematically analyzing the five core challenges and technological progress in halide solid-state electrolytes, providing scientific summaries and forward-looking prospects for the development directions of new electrolytes and cathode materials. He also provided valuable technical guidance to GEM’s innovation team.

He further that at the outset of the “15th Five-Year Plan,” new energy storage and solid-state batteries, as one of the six new pillar industries, will become key drivers of new quality productive forces. He expressed his expectation to leverage the complementary strengths of both parties, deepen collaboration, and jointly advance the technological innovation and industrialization of cathode materials for solid-state batteries.

Chairman Xu Kaihua expressed sincere gratitude for Academician Sun Xueliang and his delegation continued support, noting his contributions as GEM’s Chief Scientist during the “14th Five-Year Plan” period. Chairman Xu emphasized that GEM will focus on three core businesses: the recovery and extraction of critical metal resources, the recycling and utilization of lithium power batteries, and the core manufacturing of new energy materials.

Chairman Xu underscored that breakthroughs in all-solid-state lithium battery materials will be central to GEM’s strategy to become a global leader in cathode material innovation and industrialization. To achieve this critical objective, GEM will collaborate closely with Academician Sun Xueliang and his technical team at the Institute of Matter and Energy, Eastern Institute of Technology, Ningbo. By adopting a model of “super-leading guidance + engineering innovation,” both parties aim to leverage their complementary strengths to accelerate the industrialization of all-solid-state lithium battery cathode material technologies.

“With the empowerment of a technical master like Academician Sun Xueliang, GEM will certainly make a strong start during the ‘15th Five-Year Plan’ period, taking the lead and standing firmly at the forefront,” Chairman Xu Kaihua said.
