In September, 2025, the Huafa Qixianqin National Intellectual Property Rights Operation Public Service Platform officially released the “2025 List of China’s Top 500 Enterprises in Patent Strength” ( hereinafter referred to as the “List” ). Thanks to its comprehensive capabilities in developing, utilizing, and managing intellectual property, GEM ranks 230th on the list - an impressive leap of 14 places compared to its 2024 position.

This significant improvement in GEM’s patent strength ranking reflects the success of its long-standing innovation formula: “Super Talent + Super Equipment + Super Innovation = Super Technology”.

Professor Xu Kaihua, Founder and Chairman of GEM, has called on all GEM members to innovate relentlessly, break through critical technological barriers, and unlock new growth channels. Under the principle of “original, first-of-its-kind, and world-leading quality,” the company is implementing an “Innovation Task Force” initiative to drive breakthrough technologies and accelerate business expansion. GEM is focusing on key technologies in ultra-high energy density materials, advanced materials, high-entropy materials, and critical mineral recycling technologies to support major national and industrial needs and promote high-quality development.

So far this year, GEM has launched several globally pioneering high-end products—such as ultra-high nickel 9-series ternary core-shell precursors and ultra-high nickel 9-series quaternary core-shell precursors—which have entered international markets, showcasing the core value of GEM’s patent strength. In the field of critical mineral recycling, GEM has expanded into the recovery and utilization of scandium, tantalum, niobium, and other strategic metals. It is also deepening its technical layout for in-situ battery recycling, building an efficient global green supply chain.

The Huafa Qixianqin Platform is a national-level intellectual property operation and transaction public service platform approved by the Ministry of Finance and the China National Intellectual Property Administration. The List is based on a weighted scientific evaluation of three core data sources: Chinese invention patents, utility model patents, and PCT international patent applications, making it a widely recognized and authoritative ranking.

The 2025 edition highlights regional coordination and industry-driven innovation trends. Companies such as Huawei, BYD, and GEM, representative of China’s globally expanding private enterprises, are leading the rankings, which reflects the increasing significance of PCT international patents in global competition.

In terms of global patent deployment, GEM has filed nearly 6,000 patent applications worldwide, including 400 PCT applications, with 72 patents granted abroad. In 2024, GEM invested $30 million to establish the China–Indonesia Joint Research Laboratory for New Energy Materials and Metallurgy Engineering Technology in Bandung, in partnership with Bandung Institute of Technology and Central South University. The lab has already filed over 150 core patents related to laterite nickel ore and the downstream new energy industry chain, becoming a major innovation engine for GEM.

Tasked with the mission of producing world-class patent achievements, the lab aims to generate over 100 innovations annually and apply for no fewer than 500 global patents per year, targeting a cumulative total of 3,000 global patent applications by 2030.
