On July 21, 2025, GEM proudly held the launch ceremony for the world’s first and only industrialized ultra-high nickel 9-series quaternary core–shell precursor at its Jingmen Industrial Park. This milestone marks a major breakthrough following six years of dedicated research and development and represents the highest level of global achievement in lithium battery precursor manufacturing. With this success, GEM has filled a significant industry gap and demonstrated the powerful innovation and technological capabilities of Chinese enterprises in the field of advanced new energy materials.
This landmark mass production and delivery not only clearly shows GEM’s leadership across R&D, manufacturing, and global market integration, but also transforms years of technological innovation into tangible economic value. It further strengthens China’s ability to independently control key segments of the global new energy materials supply chain, reinforcing the voice and influence of Chinese enterprises in this strategic industry. This achievement stands as a milestone in global market leadership driven by Chinese technology breakthroughs.
In the midst of the resounding salute of cannon fire, Dr. Zhang Kun, Senior Deputy General Manager and Director of GEM Central R&D Center, solemnly announced, “The world’s first ultra-high-nickel 9-series quaternary core–shell precursor has officially entered mass production and delivery !”
Since initiating research on core–shell structures in 2019, GEM’s R&D team has spent six years overcoming key technical challenges, opening up new channels for growth. By designing a novel three-layer micron-scale structure, they upgraded the traditional one-layer precursor to a three-layered core–shell structure—without altering the material’s overall metal composition. The nickel concentration gradually decreases from core to shell, while manganese increases accordingly. This reduces the interfacial reactivity between the material and the electrolyte, minimizes side reactions, and enhances cycling stability and safety, all while maintaining high energy density.
The GEM technical team successfully developed the world’s first 8-series high-nickel core–shell technology in 2022 and the world’s first 9-series ultra-high-nickel core–shell technology in April 2025. The latest 9-series quaternary version involves even greater complexity. By precisely controlling wet-process nano-assembly and crystal face-oriented growth, the team overcame a series of critical technical barriers—bringing this unprecedented ultra-high nickel quaternary material into full-scale industrial production. This technology represents the world’s highest technical achievement in the field of lithium battery precursor manufacturing and is the first and only industrialized application of quaternary core–shell precursors globally.
The product is scheduled for a monthly shipment volume of 2,000 tons, 100% dedicated to leading global customers. With cutting-edge performance and advanced design, it opens a new channel for growth for GEM’s precursor business and significantly strengthens its global market position in the face of increasing international competition. This successful mass production once again affirms GEM’s comprehensive leadership in R&D, manufacturing, and market presence across the global new energy materials sector.
The industrialization of the world’s first ultra-high nickel 9-series quaternary core–shell precursor not only fills a critical gap in the industry but also breaks through long-standing technological barriers.
