On June 5, 2025, to mark the 54th World Environment Day, GEM held a series of open-house events under the theme “Pioneering a Beautiful China, Shaping a Green Future” across its industrial parks. Guided by the strategy of “running factories with open doors,” these events drew the participation of thousands of citizens. The activities offered the public a close-up look at GEM’s recycling culture, promoted environmental knowledge and awareness, and showcased GEM’s green industrial achievements. Through these efforts, GEM seeks to mobilize public engagement in ecological protection and contribute to building a Beautiful China and advancing global sustainable development.

The Origins of World Environment Day
World Environment Day is observed annually on June 5. It is one of the United Nations’ key platforms for promoting global environmental awareness and encouraging governmental action on environmental issues. Each year, the UN system and governments around the world organize activities on this day to emphasize the importance of protecting and improving the human environment.

On June 5, nearly a hundred participants—including local residents, specially appointed corporate environmental supervisors, Party Secretaries of 11 administrative villages, and other community representatives—joined the public open day at GEM’s Jingmen Industrial Park in Hubei Province. Visitors toured GEM’s “Urban Mining” Museum, the National Engineering Technology Research Center for Recycling of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment, the Safety and Environmental Management Center, the Green E-waste Recycling Center, the wastewater treatment plant, and three low-carbon industrial zones. They witnessed GEM’s remarkable transformation journey, observed the sophisticated technologies turning waste into valuable resources, and gained insight into the strong momentum behind GEM’s new energy materials industry. The visit offered a deep impression of GEM’s unwavering commitment to its principle: “No environmental protection, no production.”

The delegation visited the Nickel Resource Museum and engaged in an in-depth exploration of its content. By opening its doors to global environmental advocates, GEM continues to fulfill its responsibility of promoting green industrial values and sharing positive energy for a sustainable future.

In Taixing, Jiangsu, students and teachers from the Taixing Normal University Affiliated Primary School, Daqing Campus visited GEM’s Taixing Industrial Park for an educational field trip. The students showed great enthusiasm, listened attentively to the guides, asked insightful questions, and engaged in active discussions about cobalt extraction technologies, recycling practices, and future trends. This journey to the Cobalt Industry Museum served not only as a vivid lesson in mineralogy, metallurgy, and materials science, but also as an important class on national development and scientific self-reliance. The visit helped students develop resource awareness, appreciate the power of science and technology, broaden their career horizons, and foster a stronger sense of responsibility. They left inspired to contribute to China’s technological advancement. The students described the visit as enriching and enlightening—it deepened their understanding and pride in the scientific strength behind “Made in China,” and ignited their passion for science.

In Ningde, Fujian Province, Fu’an QM Industrial Park held an activity themed “Clean Plastic, Green Future – Hands-on Protection for Our Home.” Despite the summer heat, enthusiasm for environmental protection remained high. Employees volunteered in a clean-up campaign covering nearby roads, communities, and wetland areas. Acting as guardians of the urban environment, they demonstrated GEM’s environmental values through concrete action and shared GEM’s green culture and message of hope with the wider public.

GEM’s World Environment Day 2025 activities were a resounding success. They showcased GEM’s innovations and practices in the circular economy and affirmed its role as a global leader in sustainable development. These events also inspired broader public participation in ecological protection. In 2024, GEM’s “Urban Mining” operations reduced carbon emissions by 1.1064 million tons—up 54.61% year-on-year—equivalent to planting 50.29 million trees. This contribution highlights GEM’s global leadership in resource recycling and offers a Chinese solution to green transitions in the global new energy industry.
