From September 20th to 22nd 2023, the "2023 Sustainable Mineral Supply Chain International Forum" (SMISC), organized by the China Chamber of Commerce of Metals, Minerals & Chemicals Importers & Exporters (CCCMC) and hosted by the Responsible Cobalt Initiative (RCI), was held in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China. GEM, as a member company of RCI, was invited to participate in this forum. Ms. Zhang Wei, Deputy General Manager of the group, was invited to participate in the formal launch of the "Mining Industry's Engagement in Biodiversity Conservation Initiative" and delivered a keynote speech titled "Developing 'Urban Mines' and Exploring Low-Carbon Solutions in the Mineral Supply Chain."
Currently, the global response to climate change-driven energy transition has created unprecedented opportunities for the new energy industry, leading to exponential growth in demand for new energy minerals. Environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) issues in the mining industry and mineral supply chains have garnered widespread attention from stakeholders both domestically and internationally. In this context, the forum, themed "Enhancing Mining Industry Governance, Building Supply Chain Partnerships, and Driving New Energy Transformation," brought together over 300 senior managers and authoritative experts from international organizations, domestic and foreign government departments, multinational corporations, research institutions, industry organizations, social organizations, standard-setting bodies, and auditing agencies. Together, they analyzed ESG risks in the mining industry and challenges in supply chain governance, seeking to explore mechanisms for building upstream and downstream partnerships and involving multiple stakeholders to promote the sustainable development of mineral supply chains.
On September 21st, Deputy General Manager Zhang Wei was invited to participate in the launch of the "Mining Industry's Engagement in Biodiversity Conservation Initiative." On September 22nd, Ms. Zhang Wei delivered a speech titled "Developing 'Urban Mines' and Exploring Low-Carbon Solutions in the Mineral Supply Chain." She introduced GEM as one of the few companies globally that fully integrates the upstream and downstream of the new energy industry. GEM achieves this through a "green-to-green" circular model across the entire lifecycle of the new energy industry chain, creating a highly synergistic case of low-carbon practice in the industry chain. GEM circular industry not only addresses the resource scarcity issue in the new energy industry but also contributes to the global development of the new energy industry and the low-carbon development of the global mineral supply chain, representing the path to achieving global sustainable development.
As a leading global player in the new energy industry, GEM is committed to strengthening policy guidance in the mineral supply chain, responsible procurement, and risk management in ESG. The company actively promotes biodiversity conservation projects such as forest protection, ecosystem restoration, and endangered species protection in mining areas, combining theory with practice and collaborating with various stakeholders to advance sustainable corporate development. Simultaneously, GEM will work with international organizations worldwide to continuously promote the green transformation of the global mining industry, making a green contribution on behalf of Chinese enterprises towards building a resilient and sustainable global mineral supply chain.
